Trip Overview
What you can expect
You will be based along Sri Lanka’s southern coastline, where you’ll contribute directly to sea turtle conservation while immersing yourself in the country’s rich cultural heritage.
Turtle hatchling releases
At the Turtle Conservation Centre, you’ll support daily tasks such as feeding rescued turtles, cleaning tanks, and caring for hatchlings in the hatchery. You’ll get to work with many different species of turtles here – the conservation project focuses on protecting Green, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, and Hawksbill Turtles. Evenings often bring the unforgettable experience of releasing baby turtles into the ocean, helping give them the best chance of survival.
Community outreach
Beyond animal care, you’ll play a role in wider community conservation initiatives. This includes beach clean-ups to protect marine habitats, educational mural painting, and running environmental workshops with local schools to inspire future generations of conservationists. These activities combine hands-on service with meaningful community impact, giving you the chance to learn about the broader connections between ecosystems and society, and play a role in supporting conservation work in the wider community.
Cultural discoveries
There will also be plenty of opportunities to explore Sri Lanka’s landscapes and traditions. From an exciting river safari through the mangroves of Madu River to exploring Buddhist temples and learning to cook traditional dishes, you’ll gain a deep appreciation of the country’s history and culture. By the end of the programme, you’ll leave with new conservation skills, lasting friendships, and a greater awareness of the challenges facing marine ecosystems.
Why Sri Lanka for your Conservation and Environment programme?
Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to study the challenges of marine conservation, particularly around endangered sea turtles. Students will work first-hand with conservationists tackling issues such as poaching, pollution, and habitat loss, while seeing how community education and hands-on work can make a measurable difference.
Beyond its conservation focus, this programme also offers a unique cultural dimension. From exploring Buddhist temples and colonial forts to taking part in local cooking and craft traditions, students experience how culture and environment are interwoven in Sri Lanka. This balance of conservation service and cultural immersion provides a structured and curriculum-relevant platform to enhance learning in biology, geography, and global citizenship.
